Communication Officer - NOB Fixed Term

If you are qualified Somali National looking for a chance to make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable Somali children while gaining opportunities for career growth, you are invited to apply for the above post of Communication Officer, with UNICEF Somalia to be based in Mogadishu. If successful, you will be part of a dynamic and passionate team in Somalia and Nairobi that works together to improve the health, nutrition, water, sanitation, hygiene, and basic education of Somali girls and boys and protect them from violence, exploitation and abuse.
The successful candidate will be offered a Fixed Term Appointment for one year. Further extensions will be based on organizational needs, availability of funds and satisfactory performance.
Purpose of the Post
Assists in the planning and the implementing, of a public information, advocacy and communication strategy to get children’s and women’s issues into the public domain, strengthen political will in support of UNICEF's mission and objectives in the country, and enhance the organization’s credibility and brand.
Major duties and responsibilities
  1. Communication materials development: Ensure that the production of communication materials is in quality and timely executed and followed up to support country communication strategy, regional and global campaigns and priorities and to support resource mobilization as set out in the work plan.
  2. Media relations networking: Ensure effective and timely professional assistance and support are provided in developing, drafting and maintaining contact information, materials and relationships with journalists and media outlets covering all media – print, TV, radio, web etc. – in the country, to communicate the story of UNICEF's cooperation to a wider audience.
  3. Celebrities, partners and special events: Ensure that the Country Office’s contact list of individuals, groups, organizations and fora (including Government, UN, and bilateral counterparts), are maintained and further developed, whose support is essential to/can assist in achieving the advocacy and communication objectives and who support and are able to actively participate in special events and activities that further the country programme goals.
  4. International partners networking: ensure relations and contacts with all international partners supporting Somali, UNICEF implementing partners, UN partners, bilateral and multilateral agencies is updated.
  5. Monitoring and evaluation: Regular monitoring and evaluation of activities and ensure they are undertaken according to the work plan to ensure maximum impact and continuous improvement of country communication efforts. Ensure results and reports are prepared and shared on a timely basis.
Qualifications, Experience and Attributes:
· University degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or a related field.
· Excellent writing skills and proven record of achievements in the fields of communication and public relations.
· At least five years practical professional work experience in communication, print and broadcast media, or interactive digital media.
· Field work experience (for NO)
· Background/familiarity with Emergency situations;
· Fluency in English and Somali language is required. Knowledge of another official UN language or a local language is an asset;
