Purpose of the PositionUnder close supervision of the Child Survival & Development Specialist (ACSD) and as part of the UNICEF EPI program
for Somalia, the Immunization Officer is responsible, in his/her own area of responsibility, to assist the PO H/N for the
implementation of the EPI/ PEI activities set forth in the PPA. More specifically in the following areas: Planning, Training,
Implementation, Reporting of activities and advocacy for EPI with all partner agencies operational in NEZ. (UN,
International and national non-governmental organizations and local authorities).
Key Expected Results
  1. Programme Management:
Develop, plan and oversee the overall implementation of the EPI annual work plan with government and implementing
partners;
Review budget submissions to ensure accuracy and appropriate coding;
Manage partnerships and ensure timely disbursement of funds and liquidation of advances;
Submit distribution plans for vaccines and other related programme supplies; liaise with Nairobi based colleagues on
estimated arrival times and ensure timely release at the zonal level. 2. Planning & Micro- planning:
Ensure micro-planning for the various activities to be carried out in a timely and technical sound manner. Perform EPI
fixed sites and acceleration activities at regional and district level. Organize quarterly review sessions with all partners to
provide feedback on activities carried out. 3.Training:
Ensure that vaccination teams (acceleration) are properly trained on the various aspect of EPI.
Use and translate he appropriate training guidelines (WHO)
Be part of the Somalia training core group
Participate in the Mid-level management training of vaccinators, cold chain managers, mid-level managers.
Participate in training activities and micro-planning workshops for the NIDs/SNIDs.
Participate in the training of District Field Assistants for the conduction of community sensitization and awareness
seminars.
Participate in AFP surveillance training programs for health workers/NGO staff. 4. Implementation:
Ensure correct and timely implementation of the planned activities according the agreed strategies for Somalia. Facilitate
organization of CHDs in NEZ. Provide proper guidance during implementation
Ensure proper supervision of the activities. 5. Reporting and feedback:
Ensure timely and correct reporting using the standard formats provided.
Submit to the CSD Specialist a monthly activity report outlining achievements, constraints and future plans.
Liaise with the data focal points (M&E) and provide the correct monthly EPI reporting.
Gather and analyze EPI data received from the implementing partners on a monthly basis and forward them to WHO for
further analysis and feedback.
Complete and submit to the Focal Point a monthly report on the AFP surveillance in the area of responsibility and keep a
line listing of all surveillance activities in the area of responsibility.
Submit to the Focal Point a monthly activity report outlining achievements, constraints and future plans.
Report on quality of implementation of NIDs in his/her areas of responsibility after each round. 6. Social mobilization
Ensure the recently IEC EPI package is disseminated and used correctly. Liaise with the PCSM focal point in your zone
on all issues related to social mobilisation activities for EPI and PEA including AFP. Meet regularly community leaders
and elders to inform them about EPI and polio eradication efforts Train the District Field Assistants to conduct Social
Mobilization workshops for NIDs/ AFP surveillance activities. 7. Polio Eradication:
Participate in the implementation of NIDs and Sub NID's (Polio eradication) in all towns, villages, rural and nomadic
areas. 8. Monitoring and Supervision:
Supervise the implementation of the routine EPI activities (fixed sites and acceleration activities). Supervise the work of
the Polio Officer and District Field Assistants.
Monitor and analyse surveillance data for polio and measles and alert the Head of Section of possible outbreaks
Qualifications of Successful Candidate
University degree in Social Sciences or related technical field.
Minimum two years professional experience in polio and/or EPI activities.
Fluency in Somali and good working knowledge of English is required.
Analytical and conceptual ability; communication skills
Planning and monitoring skills; ability to organize work projects.
Ability to make timely and quality judgements and decisions.
Computer skills, including internet navigation, and various office applications.
Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-cultural environment, and establish harmonious and effective working relationships
both within and organization.
