The International Rescue Committee has been working in Somalia since 2006, providing essential services to conflict and disaster affected communities. The IRC has been operational in Nugal , Central Somalia (Mudug and Galgadud regions) and Mogadishu implementing interventions in the areas of livelihood, WASH and health reaching out to more than 200,000 conflict and drought affected people.
Summary of Responsibilities:
The WASH Infrastructure and Maintenance Assistant will work under the overall leadership of the Senior WASH Officer for the implementation of the borehole rehabilitation activities in IRC WASH program, Somalia, but directly supervised by the WASH Officer.
Key Responsibilities:
· Assist in conducting field-based needs assessments and to consolidate the information planning and implementing future WASH project activities in the intervention area.
· Servicing boreholes through undertaking preventive maintenance activities
· Training and supervising local borehole operators pump mechanics;
· Enforcing community based maintenance system; and
· Preparing status quarter report regarding the boreholes in the intervention area
· Provide support to the local communities in rehabilitating their dysfunctional boreholes.
· Advice IRC EH sector on the availability of materials needed for preventive maintenance and tools in repairing the dysfunctional Boreholes
· Enlist and train Water facility operators in the intervention area and sensitize water resource managements and mobilize the committees to find the appropriate technology to coup water scarcity through enforcement of local maintenance strategies and techniques.
· Assist in community meetings to raise community ownership and awareness of the existing water infrastructures
· Organize and monitor community facility operators and/or casual labor work teams as required.
· Provide timely reports on the field trips, monitoring visits and assessments to the WASH Officer
· Compile weekly, monthly and other circumstantial reports as may be required
Qualifications
· Should have Diploma in electro-mechanics or related field of study from a recognized institution.
· Should have at least 5 years of electromechanical work or similar experiences
· Capacity and willingness to assist and build the capacity of the community;
· Knowledge and experience in electromechanical equipments like pumps and generators
· Proven knowledge in the rehabilitation of boreholes and shallow wells
· Can read and write Somali and English languages, knowledge on report writing is an additional asset.
