Vacancy: Somaliland / Somalia Democratisation Project Manager
Saferworld is an independent non-governmental organisation that works to prevent and reduce violent conflict and promote cooperative approaches to security.
We work with civil society, governments and international organisations to encourage and support effective policies and practices through advocacy, research and policy development, and through supporting the development of local capacities and structures.
Saferworld has been working in Africa since 1997, with a primary focus upon East Africa and the Horn region.
We have well-established programmes in Kenya, Uganda, Somalia and Sudan.
In addition, Saferworld supports regional and international conflict prevention and security processes.
Saferworld’s headquarters are in London, with a regional office in Nairobi, and country offices in Kampala and Juba.
The Somalia programme currently has three strands of work focusing on governance & democratisation, peacebuilding & reconciliation and security & justice.
The primary purpose is to oversee the delivery of an EC-funded project to strengthen oversight of the forthcoming Somaliland Presidential and Parliamentary elections which are anticipated to be held in 2015.
Saferworld, through its local partners, has a long history of supporting such processes in Somaliland.
This project builds on earlier initiatives including re-forming the Somaliland Civil Society Election Forum (SCISEF), a coalition of CSOs who conduct policy analysis and advocacy on election legislation and conduct broader monitoring of the delivery of the election and coordinating a largescale Democratisation Observation Mission for both the election registration process and the election itself.
In addition, the post-holder will act as the interim Head of Office for Saferworld in Somaliland overseeing the set-up of the Somaliland Office and assist in the development of Saferworld’s longerterm work on democratisation issues across Somaliland and Somalia.
