Advocacy Adviser (Gender-Based Violence)

Sixteen-month placement
Please note that the selected applicant will be required to take up the placement by March.
The Advocacy Adviser will be based at Progressio Somaliland’s office and work alongside key staff in the organisation, coalition members and with the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, on a daily basis, to support the implementation of the project entitled ‘Amplifying Civil Society Voice on Gender-Based Violence in Somaliland’. You will be taking a lead on advocacy-related activities by training 12 civil society organisations and providing on-going mentoring and on-the-job coaching.
Due to the context of this placement, previous experience of working with NGOs on gender-based violence is highly desirable.
The successful candidate should have a Master’s degree in social or community development, development studies, or another relevant discipline.
A minimum of five years’ experience within the NGO sector is essential. You should have three years’ experience in organisational capacity building. Experience in community development and mobilisation; training/facilitation methodologies and direct training, particularly on advocacy, communication, campaigning using social media, and networking on gender-based violence; report writing to donors, and working in a resource poor environment is also essential.
An understanding of the issues facing a post-conflict society; of the role which NGOs play in democratisation, and of areas linked to gender-based violence is essential. You should also have skills in gender mainstreaming; coordination/networking with like-minded organisations, and participatory monitoring and evaluation methods. Good team building skills and a consensus-led approach to work; analytical and prioritising skills; interpersonal and communication skills, including a good command of English (spoken and written) are also essential.
A willingness to undertake road travel in Somaliland; cultural sensitivity in an Islamic/Somali environment, and a personal commitment to learning the basics of the Somali language is required.
