OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION
Under the overall guidance of the Somalia Infrastructure Project Manager and the direct supervision of the Project Engineer, the intern, will assist the project engineer to supervise and manage the Construction works for the project that he/she has been assigned to and to make sure the works are being implemented as per the laid down contract terms and conditions.
GENERAL FUNCTIONS
Role objective:
Under the overall guidance of the Somalia Infrastructure Project Manager and the direct supervision of the Project Engineer, the intern, will assist the project engineer to supervise and manage the Construction works for the project that he/she has been assigned to and to make sure the works are being implemented as per the laid down contract terms and conditions. Please note we have 3 vacancies for this role one each in Baidoa, Kismayo and Beletweyne.
· Specifically the incumbent assist in the following substantive tasks, this list is not representative of all the duties required but indicates typical duties and responsibilities:
· Assist to oversee the implementation of works for the specific project and maintains the necessary and appropriate means in monitoring progress of works according to contract schedules, specifications and project plans.
· Assist the project engineer who is focal officer, to provide support and guidance, and assist in resolving site problems, as necessary.
· Responsible for supervision of technical staff and consultants assigned to project, and completion of evaluation of their performance on their assigned duties.
· Maintains his attendance on a daily basis on the project site in order to identify the existing problems and provide appropriate solutions through application of sound engineering standards in consultation with the Project Manager/Senior Engineer.
· Assist in updating the list of unit prices for construction materials and labor costs and also the preparation of a database for the available materials and suppliers of the construction industry in the local market.
· Assist in preparation of progress reports on construction activities and submission of such on a weekly basis to the Project engineer for review and onward submission by project engineer to project manager/Senior Engineer.
· Assist in the identification, evaluation, selection and supervision of building contractors for specified project work.
· Perform any other duties as may be requested by the Project Manager/Senior Engineer.
· Actively engage in knowledge sharing and also improve one’s professional skills.
Expected output:
· Monitoring and progress controls.
· Ensure the construction works are being carried out within the stipulated time, cost and quality standards.
· Prepare appropriate reports and assessments as required.
· Ensure team effort is provided for Client submissions for timely delivery and within allocated budget.
· Accurate implementation of the site works which are to be of good quality by observing all appropriate/relevant standards and UN guidelines if relevant.
Project reporting:
This role reports to the Project Engineer.
Team management:
Team management experience is not required for this role
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE
Education:
§ Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
Work experience:
§ Minimum of 1 year of demonstrable relevant Construction experience.
Geographical experience:
§ Minimum of 1 years of experience in Africa with local experience in Baidoa, Kismayo, and Beletweyne Somalia is an advantage.
Languages:
· Effective written and verbal communication skills in English are a must.

· Knowledge and capacity to manage project documentation to professional and accurate standards.
· Flexibility and ability to quickly grasp complex structures.
· Good team player attitude.

· Thorough knowledge of computer and database applications such as Windows, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, AutoCAD etc.
· Excellent team player.
Other relevant information:
• Studying for or completed or a Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
• Relevant work experience desirable but not mandatory.
