International Youth & Gender Specialist - Somalia

Banyan Global is seeking an international Youth & Gender Specialist for a USAID-funded economic growth initiative working in all three regions of Somalia to promote an enabling environment for increased economic participation at the local level. The Youth & Gender Specialist will lead the integration of youth and gender programming across all program activities; which aims to improve the representation of these marginalized groups’ interests in decision-making processes and ensure that they benefit from the initiative’s activities to improve economic growth, income and employment opportunities.
The Youth & Gender Specialist will be based in Mogadishu, Somalia with occasional travel to Somaliland, Puntland and Kenya. Ideal candidates have a minimum of 3 - 5 years of experience in youth workforce development, economic inclusion, and/or youth and gender integration in economic growth programming.
Duties and responsibilities include:
  • Develop specific gender and youth-sensitive implementation approaches within the initiative’s engagement strategy to allow for greater economic inclusion and opportunity in the target agricultural value chains.
  • Ensure that youth are integrated and gender is mainstreamed across the program, including training materials, monitoring and evaluation plans, and design activities that target youth, women and girls within the scope of the project;
  • Facilitate gender trainings with program staff and program stakeholders;
  • Identify and work with local Somali partners focused on women and youth; working with women and youth networks to encourage increased employment within the target agricultural value chains;
  • Develop capacity building trainings for local youth on agriculture entrepreneurship and economic growth;
  • Prepare logistical arrangements for youth and gender events, interviews, and activities, including collaborating with the operations manager and security teams;
  • Travel to project locations to oversee technical inputs;
  • Write project reports and prepare internal documentation as required.
Requirements:
  • Master’s Degree in international development, economic growth, or a related field, with a focus on youth and gender;
  • Three or more years of experience integrating youth and gender into workforce development and/or economic growth programming;
  • Prior experience working on agricultural value chains, preferred;
  • Prior experience working on USAID programs;
  • Prior experience in Somalia, preferred;
  • Fluency in Somali and/or Arabic, preferred;
  • Strong negotiations and communications skills and effective report-writing skills;
  • Strong organization skills and experience preparing logistics.
