Background:
Danish Deming Group (DDG) is a department under Danish Refugee Council (DRC). Danish Demining Group’s (DDG) mandate is to recreate a safe environment where people are free from the threat of landmines, explosive remnants of war and small arms and light weapons. DDG has operated in Somaliland since 1999 and in South Central Somalia since 2007 clearing mines and other explosive remnants of war. The organisation now implements an armed violence reduction (AVR) programme which includes the following types of activities: participatory community and district-level safety projects, community driven development, conflict prevention and management, community-police relationship building, mine risk education, explosive ordnance disposal, firearms safety education, physical security and stockpile management of firearms, and support to the review of policy and legislation on small arms and light weapons.
Purpose:
The Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Intern will assist with monitoring and evaluation of the various programmes implemented by DDG Somalia in close liaison with DDG’s M&E Advisor, DDG’s Somalia M&E staff and DDG Somalia’s Senior Management. The M&E intern will be responsible for mixed method data collection, information management, data analysis, report writing and continuous development of evaluation and assessment methods.
Responsibilities and Tasks:
To achieve the position’s objectives the intern will perform the following tasks and undertake the following responsibilities:
- Contribute to development and implementation of Monitoring and Evaluation Plans for DDG Somalia in close collaboration with the M&E Advisor
- Undertake field data collection including frequent travels to field locations where security allows it
- Assist in developing tools for data collection, both quantitative and qualitative, and provide constructive assistance to M&E Advisor, national M&E Staff field and managers concerning data collection
- Support DDG Somalia’s M&E team in collection and management of data from the field and develop new and improved ways of doing this
- Assist in data analysis, drawing accurate conclusions, and present them in usable form for the country program.
- Assist in drafting finalization of M&E reports, including impact monitoring reports.
- Be flexible / willing to take up additional tasks as may be required.

Required qualifications:
- Master degree in relevant field (e.g. African Studies, political or social sciences, development studies, geography)
- Proficiency in English – written & spoken
- Knowledge in M&E concepts, incl. practical use of logframes and impact monitoring
- Strong analytical skills
- Willing to be part of a hard working team with ambitions of ensuring monitoring and evaluation of high methodological quality in order to inform project development and to ensure organizational learning.
- Work style: well planned and organized and has a capacity for initiative and decision making with competent analytical and problem solving skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and demonstrated ability to establish effective working relations with the other team members and other stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and as a team player
Desirable qualifications:
- Good experience in database and general computer software (such as SQL Server, PostgreSQL and Access)
- Strong knowledge of applicable data management and database computer software (JavaScript APIs, Flex, Microsoft Excel/Access, SQL server)
Please note that this role has no staff management responsibility.
Conditions:
Duty station: Hargeisa, Somaliland, with some travel to low-mid level security level sites in Somaliland/Somalia. This is a ‘non-family duty station’ and the person must be prepared to live and work in a relatively Spartan and unstable security environment with limited recreational and social facilities. Accommodation is provided.
